Do vet techs wear scrubs?

Vet techs, also referred to as veterinary technicians or veterinary nurses, work alongside veterinarians during physical exams, surgical procedures and consultations. Vet techs also assist with laboratory duties, anesthetizing animals and with X-rays. With this close space to the animals, it's crucial that vet techs are dressed in comfortable clothing that's easy to wash and that is durable, hence uniform scrubs.

Unrestricted, loose-fitting cotton tops are preferred for both men and women vet techs. Uniform scrubs worn by nurses and doctors are common in both the educational and professional veterinary settings. To add variety to their day-to-day uniform, vet techs may wear patterned tops or styles with breast pockets to hold supplies. It is common for vet tech to wear top adorned with animal print patterns that match the pet-friendly atmosphere.

To match the scrub tops, vet techs wear uniform scrub-style pants. The common drawstring-style waist makes them comfortable and adjustable for vet techs of any size. These pants may or may not have pockets and usually have a wide hem at the ankle, making them easy to alter to fit taller people. Dress A Med has this and more when it comes to comfortable and customizable scrubs, appropriate for any veterinarian.

Surprisingly enough, there are some arguments against vet techs wearing said uniform scrubs in the workplace. It is thought by some that they should only be worn during surgery. However it is also thought that the main focus should be advocating for pets.

Sometimes, somewhat of a happy medium is found with this thanks to such solutions as the staff at Madison Veterinary Hospital in Madison Heights, Michigan, wearing a clean-pressed uniform consisting of a button-down collared shirt and khaki style pants. Their veterinarians and technicians only wear scrubs when performing surgery.

Overall, it does depend on the specific vet hospital that will determine if you are able to wear uniform scrubs.
